BIRMINGHAM -

The announcment came almost two weeks ago, that after almost 20 years The Birmingham Web Project will be closing it's virtual doors. The Birmingham Web Project has provided Free Web Hosting, email and related services to the Birmingham Community and surrounding areas for over 10 years. The Web Project grew out of the Matrix BBS which served Birmingham from August, 1980 through November, 1999. The founder, Rocky Rawlins, has decided that it is time to move on.

"My time these days is spent in my woodworking shop, creating items which will long outlive me." Rawlins said. High Speed Solutions, a local high speed internet and web hosting provider is working with Rawlins and the Birmingham Web Project to keep bham.net going well into the future. Brad Gutteridge, CEO of High Speed Solutions, said "Rocky is a pioneer in this field. We look forward to learning from his experience, as well as understanding his vision for the future of the project. I hope he will remain an integral part of the process."

The Birmingham Net, has over the years developed web sites for many Birmingham area attractions, city agencies, places of historical interest and various schools, churches and many other organizations. As knowledge of how to develop web pages began to spread, they provided hosting free of charge to hundreds of groups and organizations throughout the area. During the late 80's and early 90's they provided free Internet Access to dozens of local schools through the BBS and later the Web Project.

Paul Rhodes, spokesman for High Speed Solutions said "We are very excited about bringing the Web Project many new features and services through our existing infrastructure. We understand the need for low cost Internet services in the community, and we can provide this. Of course with a project of this size there will be some complication, but we will work with everyone to make this as seamless as possible."
