Alabama Rare Bird Report – Wednesday, January 16, 2008.

The Guntersville WESTERN GREBE was seen again 1/13 in Browns Creek south of AL 69. Also still present were both the RED-THROATED and PACIFIC LOON in the same general location.  A probable GLAUCOUS GULL was seen in this area 1/16.  The adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continues to be regular on or near the pilings at the south end of the US 431 bridge just north of town.  A probable 1st winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED was seen on the pilings 1/16.  A 1st winter THAYER’S GULL was studied and photographed 1/13 at the US 431 pilings and then later coming to bread chum near the Kiwanis pier just to the west.  [DeAL 26-A1][BGtA p. 259][NABT #35]

A female BLACK SCOTER was found 1/12 during a car trip behind the Wheeler NWR gates on the Tennessee River near the I-65 bridge.  This area is accessible by foot behind the refuge gates.  [DeAL 18-F4]

A female CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was banded 1/11 in Jefferson County.  The same yard is also hosting a female RUFOUS.  To try for these birds you must call the Musgroves first (205-991-3009).

A ROSS’S GOOSE was seen 1/6 with Canadas at Lake Point marina north of Eufaula.  A flock of 37 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE was also seen that day at nearby Eufaula NWR.  [DeAL 54-B4&5][BGtA p. 80-88]

The probable Glaucous-winged Gull has not been seen again at the Magnolia Springs landfill in Baldwin County.   The landfill hours are 7 am – 3 pm, Mon-Sat.  To visit, park out of the way near the scale house (not on the scale!) and go inside to ask permission to bird.  DO NOT approach the workers or equipment and if they approach you, move and DO NOT block the way.  [DeAL 63-G7][BGtA p. 37][ACBT #19]
