SPECIES MENTIONED
SNOWY OWL
FRANKLIN COUNTY
The immature SNOWY OWL was seen today, 12/18 at St. George Island State
Park. The owl was seen just where it has been seen most of the time on
the south side of the road on the tops of dunes between parking lots 6
and 8. It sometimes perches in the treetops north of the road. One day
the owl was seen about æ mile from the end of the road on the dunes. Walking
on the dunes is prohibited and the area will be patrolled and the rule
enforced. From Apalachicola, take Rt. 98 east to Eastpoint and take Rt.
31A south to the State Park. De Lorme p. 60, C3
Good Birding!
Documentation of rarities for FL Ornithological Society Records Committee
should be sent to FOSRC, c/o Archbold Biological Station, PO Box 2057,

Re: Snowy Owl
The owl is still at St. George State Park but has moved from the location
where it was seen over the weekend. As of 3PM EST today it was
sitting on a sand dune approximately 3/4 mile from the end of
the road (stop sign and unpaved road continues east) . The owl
was about 60 feet from the road between the road and the bay to the
north.

Hello, An
immature Snowy Owl has been found at St. George Is. State Park in Franklin
Co., FL (Delorme Atlas, p. 61). The bird has been present at least
since yesterday. Park staff reported it us and others yesterday and
were reasonably sure of their ID. Other birders confirmed it today, and
now I'm trying to get the word out. Please pass the word
around, and good birding.

The Snowy Owl was
still present on St. George Island just east and south of Appalachicola,
FL. The owl is within the State Park (east end of the island), and
park personnel will tell you just where it is. This is the first
verifiable record for the state of Florida (to my knowledge there are
only two previous hypotheticals), and just as few records exist for Alabama.
If you have never seen this owl, and even if you have, it is certainly
worth the trip over. FYI, St. George Island is 3 1/2 hours from
Gulf Breeze driving east on 98 in the early morning before business traffic.
