AOS Winter Meeting, 1999

The 1999 winter meeting of the Alabama Ornithological Society was held 1/22-24 at Joe Wheeler State Park (Lauderdale County). Field trip destinations included Wheeler NWR, Waterloo, Wheeler and Wilson Dams, and many points in between.

An excellent program was given by Scott Weidensaul on the marvels of bird migration and how even citizen scientists have made a difference in the conservation of these wonderful migrants.  A total of 115 species was reported at compilation, including the following noteworthy sightings:

PACIFIC LOON, 1/23 (but not on 24th), below Wheeler Dam from fishing access area
Cattle Egret, 1/24 (1 or 2 birds), reports from both north and south sides of  Wilson Dam, 1st Tennessee Valley region winter record?
Greater White-fronted Goose, 1/23, observation building, Wheeler NWR
Sandhill Crane, 1/22, flying east over I-65 bridge north of Priceville
Greater Scaup, 1/23-24, several males and females at Wheeler Dam
Common Merganser (x3), 1/23, near Waterloo
Merlin, 1/22, Decatur Boat Harbor
Sanderling (x2), 1/22, Beulah Bay, Swan Creek WMA
Long-billed Dowitcher (x3), 1/22, Beulah Bay
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL (adult), 1/23, above Wilson Dam
GLAUCOUS GULL, 1/23, near Joe Wheeler State Park Lodge
Cape May Warbler (male), 1/22-24 (present since 1/10), Weyland Home, Killen, 1st state winter record?
White-crowned Sparrow, 1/23, Hog Pond
Lapland Longspur, 1/22-23, (up to 28), golf practice area, Calhoun College
Brewer’s Blackbird, 1/23, (50+), county road 79 south of Town Creek Marsh
