Karen Wilson reported on the sale of the book and her mailings--she has fewer than 75 copies left of the original 500 ordered by AOS, cash sales total $2453.00 at this time. A motion was made and approved to order additional copies for AOS sales. Complimentary copies have been sent to ABA and Bird Watcher's Digest for review in their magazines. The first printing of the Guide was 3,000 copies. FODIAS-Land purchase: John Porter informed the Board that a second grant application has been approved for the Tupelo Gum Swamp property. The next purchase will be the vacant lot at the entrance to the Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuary. Fund Raising: There will be a raffle of four framed prints which have been donated to AOS. The winners of the raffle will select the print they want--the winner of the first drawing has first pick of the prints etc. The money from the raffle will support land purchase on Dauphin Island. There will be a live auction of the 1924 Bird Guide book this evening. CBA is planning to have a plant sale in October to raise funds. Discussion of the 50th Anniversary of AOS: Vice President, Alan Tubbs reported he planned to have a kick-off celebration beginning with the Winter AOS meeting in January, 2002. The primary activities will be held on Dauphin Island in April, and closing activities will occur in the fall. Alan is planning on having a major speaker in April and another to wrap up the year in October of 2002 Alan is also considering a special 50th Anniversary T-Shirt. Dan Holliman is preparing a history. There was a discussion of Tom Imhof's records and other birding records in the state that have little or no documentation, which could be used to provide a birding history of the state. New Business: Education: Charles Kennedy and Tommy Pratt are involved in helping to design a bird observatory at the Easter Seals Camp in Alexander City, Alabama. There will be feeders, bird houses, and a water feature. Charles is donating the birdhouses for the camp. The campers who are unable to move outside will be able to bird using an observation area and a computer. Charles asked other birders to be present for the dedication. Conservation: Dauphin Island construction was an issue, with the planned development of a seven story condominium near the public beach. Bob Reid suggested we encourage residents of Dauphin Island to write to the city. Greg Jackson spoke of the possibility of the development of Fort Morgan by private developers, and for AOS members to be aware. Bob Duncan stated he had over heard a conversation regarding the Bayou Le Batre dredge ponds--specifically that the Corps of Engineers may fill the remaining pond. Censusing: This summer the target counties will be Fayette and Monroe. Rick West discussed a through survey of the "quads" in these counties. An atlas of the entire state would cover 250 "quads" from the coastal plain area and 350 from the upland areas. 660 blocks are the total needed for the survey over a 5 year period, beginning with this year. Forty (40) blocks have been done in the Tennessee Valley area. Mr. West requested that the board members make a survey of their own neighborhoods between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July beginning at daylight and lasting for three hours. This survey has also drawn interest from the Nature Conservancy and the Natural Heritage programs, who are interested in this data. The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted; Sarah Whitfield, Secretary This page
