Alabama Breeding Bird Atlas ProjectDuring 2002 - 2006, AOS conducted an extensive project to better document the breeding birds of Alabama. This site has served to help keep everyone up-to-date on the latest happenings and assist in gathering and displaying the data. The site is now modified to show just the overall results without listing each species found in each block. We have completed the field observation phase of the project, but still solicit reports of breeding birds which include both date and location of the observation for any time from 2000 to 2006. Any thoughts, suggestions, or other ideas are welcome and can be sent to the AOS webmaster. To learn more about the breeding bird atlas (bba) project, read this article. You may also want to know who the region coordinators are for your area. Click here for a clickable map giving information for each of the nine regions or here for a listing of the regions and the counties they include. To find out more about how to help with this project, contact the project coordinator for your region or Rick West, the atlas project manager.
The current status maps include a pink color for those blocks from which we received no reports. If you do not see your breeding season observations from any of the pink areas, maybe you did not submit them. If you did, please remind your Regional Coordinator or Rick West, and we will get them in the next update. NEWS: Hurray for Great Final Season! Thanks to all the many participants who contributed to another big year, building on the wonderful four years before. Participation has continued strong at over 100 contributors, all of whom, I hope, have had a good time birding. We added about 25,000 new records to the project bringing the total to almost 150,000 records – and that is after eliminating all the duplicates and many upgrades that do not add to the number of species recorded in a block. When the last record is submitted and posted we will have exceeded 150,000 records an informal goal Atlas Project by the end of 2006. We did it! Most important we have thoroughly surveyed the 585 core CE (Central East) blocks targeted to produce a statistical sample. This is the scientific core of the project.
