What's up on the AOS website?

The Alabama Ornithological Society is involved in many worthwhile activities. Check out some of the below areas of our website to learn more about AOS and the work we are doing to promote birding and the conservation of all natural resources in Alabama.

Puerto Rican Breeding Bird Atlas (PR-BBA):  Rick West, his son Kit, and Chris Price are helping out with the PR-BBA by developing a web site for them. The AOS has given them permission to use this site during the development stage. To see it and to see what Rick is up to after he finished the field work on the ALBBA, please go to the PR-BBA page.

View a letter to the Alabama Historical Commission regarding Fort Morgan.  The Historical Commission is holding a public hearing and workshop at Gulf Shores on November 22 at 6:00 pm about the Master Plan for future development of Fort Morgan.  Since attending the meeting may be difficult for many of us, feel free to send any additional comments to the e-mail address at the top of the letter.  You may also fax your comments to 334/240-3477, phone at 334/242-3184 or mail at 468 South Perry Street, Montgomery, AL 36130.

View a letter regarding changing rules for our nation's roadless areas.  The Wood Thrush has lost 50% of its population and the colorful little Cerulean Warbler almost 75%.  Other neotropical migrants are also facing uncertain futures.  These changes could push their numbers even further downhill.  This letter is written on behalf of AOS, but your remarks are encouraged.  The comment deadline has been extended until November 15, so feel free to write or fax to the address at the top of the letter expressing your concerns.

Alabama Breeding Bird Atlas (BBA): Results from the BBA Project are now available online.  Click on the go to the BBA page link below to view.   AOS has embarked on a project to document the breeding birds of Alabama.  To learn more about this huge project, please go to the BBA page.

The AOS Education Committee: Imagine starting up bluebird trails for 6th graders and teaching adults how to prepare their gardens and yards to be bird friendly. This is just some of the many things that the Education Committee has been up to. To read more about the activities of this very active part of the AOS, please go to the Education Committee page.

Rare Bird Reports:   You can keep up with all of the latest sightings of rare or unusual birds in Alabama and surrounding states by reading the rare bird alert (RBA) reports. Check out the online transcripts for further details.

Member meetings: Get involved in AOS and interact with other birders from throughout the southeast. At AOS meetings, you can learn from engaging speakers, participate in group field trips and learn more about birding from experienced amatuer ornithologists. As a member, you will also receive all AOS publications. Go to the AOS membership page to learn more about becoming a part of this ever growing organization.
