The Birmingham Web Project has provided Free Web Hosting, email and related services to the Birmingham Community and surrounding areas for over 10 years. The Web Project grew out of the Matrix BBS which served Birmingham from August, 1980 through November, 1999. During those years we developed web sites for many Birmingham area attractions, city agencies, places of historical interest and various schools, churches and many other organizations. As knowledge of how to develop web pages began to spread we provided hosting free of charge to hundreds of groups and organizations throughout the area. During the late 80's and early 90's we provided free Internet Access to dozens of local schools through the BBS and later the Web Project. During that time the Birmingham Web Project has been privately funded and subsidized with no support from outside sources. Though there were various attempts over the years to attract donations and support from the local business and other parts of the community, none ever developed and the Project has remained a privately funded project to this day. All things change and after over 20+ years of providing online service to the Birmingham Community through free BBS and Web Services the time has come to move on. With the exception of my web support for local web developers and some commercial clients I have pretty much retired from the online industry. My time these days is spent in my woodworking shop creating items which will long outlive me. Thus, as of January 2002, the Birmingham Web Project will no longer be accepting any new web sites and will begin contacting all existing Web Project site owners about making plans to migrate their sites to other hosting providers. We plan to have the Birmingham Web Project shut down by the summer of 2002 which should allow ample lead time for organizations to find alternate hosting facilities for their sites. Note: This has no bearing on any Commercial Sites or sites hosted by Commercial Developers on our servers.
